Sebbene difficili da raggiungere, le isole Shetland sono state, nel corso della storia, rotta di innumerevoli flotte : dai pescatori dalla Groenlandia, ai viaggiatori dalle Isole Orcadi e dall’Irlanda, dai conquistatori norvegesi ai commercianti olandesi. Ogni colonizzatore ha lasciato qualcosa di proprio, in queste isole. Pur essendo, effettivamente, amministrativamente parte della Scozia, il dialetto locale differisce particolarmente da quello scozzese; il folklore è un particolare, sorprendete ibrido, che ha subito le influenze delle tradizioni scandinave e della cultura celtica.


The Shetland Islands have been, in the course of history, the main half of countless fleets over the centuries: the fishermen of Greenland, the travelers from the Orkney Islands and from Ireland, the Norwegian conquerors and the Dutch traders. The colonizers have left something of their own culture in these islands. Although is under the political administration of Scotland, the local dialect differs particularly from the Scottish dialect; the folklore is a particular, surprising hybrid, which has undergone the influences of Scandinavian traditions and Celtic culture.

ONE OF THE MOST SCENIC FESTIVALS OF EUROPE : THE PROTAGONISTS ARE FIRE AND VIKINGS



Quello delle Shetland è un arcipelago di un centinaio di isole, situato nel nord della Gran Bretagna, luogo magico che alla fine di gennaio ospita un meraviglioso festival, chiamato Up Helly Aa, considerato il più bel festival del fuoco d’Europa.

In occasione dell’Up Helly Aa, squadre di circa un migliaio di uomini, avvolti in una vasta, meravigliosa gamma abiti vichinghi., si riversano nelle strade buie della capitale delle isole Shetland. Il membro principale del gruppo, chiamato Jarl Squad.

Allo scoccare delle 19.30 il rintocco delle campane annuncia l’inizio dell’evento: le torce si infuocano, e la sorprendente, sfolgorante processione,

che serpeggia per mezzo miglio a poppa del Guizer Jarl, si accende di orgoglio. Il Guizer, fiero, acclamato dalla folla, si fa strada lungo un fiume infuocato.

Il Guizer, metafora delle prigioni vichinghe, culminerà il suo percorso con un improvviso falò, alimentato dalle migliaia di torce lanciate dalle squads.




The Shetland is an archipelago of about a hundred islands in the north of Britain, a magical place where takes place a festival called Up Helly Aa, 

in the end of January: it’s considered the most beautiful fire festival in Europe.

On the occasion of the Helly Aa, teams made up by a thousand men, wearing stunning costumes, pour into the streets of the capital of the Shetland Islands. 

The main member of the group, called Jarl Squad, wears Viking clothes. At the stroke of 19.30 the tolling of the bells announces the beginning of the event: 

the torches are on fire, and the astonishing, brilliant procession, meandering half a mile to the stern of the Guizer Jarl, lights up with pride. The Guizer, proud, acclaimed by the crowd, makes its way along a fiery river.

The Guizer, a metaphor of the Viking prisons, will culminate its course with a sudden bonfire, fueled by the thousands of torches launched by the teams.
